Life with addiction and abuse is anything but calm, cool, and collected. I'll try anything to bring a little peace to the chaos, and in my quest I found three invaluable tools: an adult coloring book, the Serenity Prayer, and the 12 Steps. Here's the story of why I combined these tools into our newest book: Find Your True Colors In 12 Steps.

Coloring Works For Me

As a kid, I loved coloring. When Crayola expanded their basic 24 pack to a 64 pack with built-in sharpener, I was in heaven. One of my most prized possessions as a young girl was a huge ice cream bucket of crayons. I spent hours digging through the bucket, memorized by the colors.

In recent years, I purchased several adult coloring books. One features peacocks, another tropical plants. Coloring is very soothing and helps focus my racing mind, but coloring can only do so much. I needed more tools.

The 12 Steps Make Sense To Me

I struggle with depression and anxiety. My family of origin has been impacted by addiction, and I learned from a young age to be over-responsible and codependent. Pre-recovery, all of my relationships were a lop-sided mess of an enmeshed me clinging to my friends and family. I had completely lost myself.

When I first learned how the 12 Steps could help me move from codependent to independent, everything clicked. This was the answer I was seeking. I attended 12 Step meetings like my life depended on it because my life depended on it.

In my 12 Step Program of choice, Celebrate Recovery, we recite the entire Serenity Prayer which talks about "being reasonably happy in this lifetime and supremely happy in the next." I could be reasonably happy? This too was profoundly life changing.

I Have To Help Others

I'm so passionate about recovery that I wanted to skip ahead to Step 12 on Day 1. Thanks to recovery, I have a life now and hope. I smile and I don't fear everything. I'm learning how to set boundaries and find joy even when people I love continue to struggle with addiction. I have peace and self-confidence.

Because I want to share the gift of recovery with others, I wrote Find Your True Colors In 12 Steps.  This 70 page black and white coloring workbook guides readers through the 12 Steps. Divided into 12 chapters, this workbook marries basic 12 Step principles with writing prompts, space to journal, and fresh scenes to color.
