Life with addiction and abuse isn't calm, cool, and collected. To recover, I daily use these invaluable tools: the 12 Steps, the Serenity Prayer, and my journal. Here's the story of why I combined these tools into our newest book: Find Your True Colors In 12 Steps.

The 12 Steps Make Sense To Me

I struggle with depression and anxiety, and everyone in my family of origin has been impacted by addiction. From a young age, I learned to be over-responsible and codependent.  Before recovery, all of my relationships were a lop-sided mess. I completely lost myself and had no hope.

When I first heard 12 Steps, everything clicked. This program has all of the answers I was seeking. Every week, I attended 12 Step meetings, and I also joined a Step study. Another powerful tool I used is the entire Serenity Prayer, which talks about "being reasonably happy in this lifetime and supremely happy in the next." I could be reasonably happy?

For the first six months, I immersed myself in recovery.  I spent many early days filling notebooks. Day after day, I wrote out the Serenity Prayer, specifically asking for help accepting my problems, guidance on what I could change, and wisdom to know what to do.

I Have To Help Others

Thanks to recovery, I have a life now and hope. I smile and I don't fear everything. I'm learning how to set boundaries and find joy even when people I love continue to struggle with addiction. I have peace and self-confidence.

Because I want to share the gift of recovery with others, I wrote Find Your True Colors In 12 Steps.  This 70 page black and white coloring workbook guides readers through the 12 Steps. Divided into 12 chapters, this workbook marries basic 12 Step principles with writing prompts, space to journal, and fresh scenes to color.
