Children’s Eating Disorders On The Rise In England

Girls ages 10 to 12 are among those seeing significant increases in treatment for eating disorders in greater Manchester, England.

Data going back six years in Greater Manchester in England indicate a significant increase in eating disorder treatment among the youngest patients.

The Manchester Evening News reported that the number of girls ages 10 to 12 receiving treatment for anorexia rose from three to 21 during the period studied. Eating disorders treatment also is increasing among males, according to eating disorders charity Beat, which seeks to dispel the notion that this is a female disease.

“The fact that we are seeing parents and families spotting signs of an eating disorder early is positive,” a Beat spokesman said. “Full recovery from an eating disorder is possible but the sooner someone gets the treatment they need, the more likely they are to make a full and sustained recovery.”

The community was shaken in December 2015 when 15-year-old Pippa McManus committed suicide after waging a three-year battle with anorexia.
