How To Make Your Home Sing

Make Your Home Nicer The Easy Way

Why make your home nicer? Once upon a time, I was an active addict who did not care much about my surroundings. I wanted my home to look nice, but I was in no position to enjoy it properly, or care for it for that matter. Now that I’ve been sober and in recovery for years, I am able to care for myself and my home. Today, if my home is not attractive, or my surroundings are cluttered, or dirty, I am actually distracted and can’t get any work done. Do you work at home like I do? If you didn’t before the pandemic, you may be at home more now. Because of the pandemic, I started spending a lot more time at home. I had to make some changes. Now, not only does my apartment have to be pleasant, but it also has to act as an office, yoga studio, meditation room, conference room, you get the idea. Making your space attractive and functional is a challenge but it is not impossible.

These are my favorite tips for improving your space while also making it more functional

Let there be light

If your home is not well lit, this is the first easy remedy. Light makes everything better. Whether you’re an fan, or have some amazing local lighting shops (or department stores) nearby, make sure your space has great lighting

Let there be space to move

There is not enough room for a yoga studio in my apartment, yet I needed to find a way to work out at home. My easy fix was to roll up the rugs. My living room lost the piece that pulled it altogether but my body got room for a yoga mat. And, that has made all the different. If you need to exercise, or even stretch everyday, make a little place for it. It will encourage you to keep going and make it easier to do everyday.

Let there be mirrors

If you do not have a big space, add mirrors. For example, if you are renting in one of the apartments near San Antonio and you want to create a bigger feeling, mirrors can be your best friend. When I was fixing up my first apartment, my decorator friend went to Home Depot and bought mirror tiles and glued them to the lower half of one of my walls. It was cheap and it actually looked really cool. Wall mirrors are also great and come in all shapes, sizes and costs.

Let there be greenery

Adding a few houseplants can also soothe the mind and soul while making the place look a bit brighter. Get that green energy around your workspace, and anywhere you sit regularly so you can see it and enjoy. I’m in Southern California so finding inexpensive greenery is not that hard but “I bet if you do a little research, there’s plenty near you that has some good stuff too.

God, give me space to work

My partner and I are moving soon and looking at new places. One of the biggest questions that comes up when we look at houses is, where will we both work and will we be able to hear each other? Creating a workspace doesn’t just involve having a literal space to work. If you have a busy home, or specific work needs, creating a usable workspace means finding quiet, good internet, trying to limit the home distractions, making a plan for childcare and animal care so you are not disturbed. So, making your home nicer consists of two things in our mind: one, figure out what your needs are for your home so you can create spaces, or at least a plan, for every activity. Two, if your space does not look physically attractive to you, decide how it needs to be fixed. Does it need de-cluttering? Will a fresh coat of paint, window dressings, lights, or a proper desk make a huge difference? Make a list and attack it one by one.
